Vibrant at 40+: Unlock Your Mindset
Focus on progress, not perfection: First off, let's agree that perfection is overrated and creates all sorts of pressure on our already, overwhelmed brain. Don't beat yourself up for not achieving your goals overnight, or even in a week or two, cause we both know that's not even possible, right. Instead, give yourself credit & celebrate small wins along the way and focus on your progress. Maybe you passed on that slice of cake, or you took the stairs instead of the elevator - whatever it is, celebrate it!! Keep your eye on the big picture: Remember why you started on this journey in the first place.
Practice self-compassion: We're all guilty of being too hard on ourselves sometimes, and that may be an understatement, but imagine if you treated yourself the way you treat your best friend. You wouldn't tell your bestie she's a loser and should just give up would you? Why then, do we say such mean things to ourselves? I know it's easy to dwell on mistakes and past failures, instead let them go and view them as learning experiences. Be kind, be supportive, and remember that you're doing the best you can. You are enough.
Cultivate a growth mindset: Believe in yourself and your ability to learn, grow and improve.
Welcome new challenges, even if they feel uncomfortable or difficult. Approach them with a sense of curiosity and openness.
Look at a “mistake” as a learning opportunity and a chance for growth.
Adopt a “not yet” line of thinking. Learn from your challenges and keep going.
Remember, progress not perfection. Keep your eye on the bigger picture.
From “I have to” to “I get to”: When we view our habits/actions as something we must do, it can feel like a chore. This may lead to resentment and eventually cause us to give up altogether.
For example, exercise.
Focus on the positive benefits it brings to your life. How good you feel afterwards, your sense of accomplishment and how it helps improve your health and wellbeing.
Recognize exercise as a way to show respect and love for your body and express gratitude for all it allows you to do.
Shifting your perspective from “I have to” to “I get to” can help us be more mindful of the positive impact our healthy habits have on our life.
Find your “WHY”: Identify your underlying motivation for wanting to adopt healthier habits, lose weight and improve your overall wellbeing.
Think about what's important to you in life. What values do you hold dear? How does improving your health align with those values?
For example, if you value family, think about how being healthier can help you be there for your loved ones.
Identify your goals: What do you hope to achieve by improving your health? Do you want to have more energy to play with your kids or grandkids? Do you want to feel confident in your own skin? Identifying specific goals can help you clarify your "why."
Visualize your future self:
How do you feel?
What are you able to do that you couldn't do before?
What makes this important to you?
Practice mindfulness: Practice mindfulness and focus on being present in the moment. This can help you tune in to your body's signals and make healthier choices.
Observe your thoughts: Notice thoughts or feelings that arise, but try not to get caught up in them. Instead, observe them with curiosity and let them pass by without judgement.
Express gratitude: At the end of each day, write down three things you're grateful. Practicing gratitude can help shift your mindset from one of lack to one of abundance, and help you cultivate more positive emotions and experiences in your life.
Bottom line: Instead of thinking of your new healthy way of being as a temporary phase or sacrifice, reframe them as a long term investment in your health and wellbeing.
